Rick Clasby, UTA, 7/10/2017 – On Friday, June 23, 2017, the Utah Trucking association hosted its annual Road Rally. This was once again a very successful event. The Road Rally is organized to allow motorcycle and car enthusiasts to come together to enjoy one another’s company, talk business and share lessons learned about their vehicles, businesses and life in general. This event also helps to support the association’s Political Action Committee. All proceeds are donated to TruckPac, which is the mechanism used to donate to political candidates, campaigns or parties. Most important this event is a family-friendly opportunity to have a great time and see new parts of our country.
This year’s event had nearly 40 participants, most riding motorcycles, a couple driving jeep wranglers and several using their favorite car/truck. The youngest participant, Linkin Davis, Val Stokes’ grandson, added life and enthusiasm to the party. More sons, daughters, granddaughters and grandsons are encouraged next year.
Most of the group gathered at the association’s headquarters in West Valley where they enjoyed a tasty breakfast provided by Quality Tire. As is always the case, a pre-trip safety and logistics briefing was offered. This year Mark Droubay, Utah Trucking Association President, conducted this meeting and welcomed the group, thanked the sponsors and most poignant called for a moment of silence for Greg Lunkwitz who had passed away just days earlier. Greg was a long-time member of the association and member of the Board of Directors. He also loved to ride his Harley Davidson and participated in the association’s Road Rally every year. Greg also sponsored of this event.
The northern participants departed West Valley and rode through the Tooele Valley, stopped briefly in Delta to fuel and then proceeded to Baker, Nevada for the scheduled lunch break. The southern riders joined each other along the road and met the northern group in Baker. A scout party consisting of Dan Poulson, Stacey Bettidge, and Justin Brande surveyed this area weeks ahead of the rally and identified a few locations to visit, including T&D’s, Lehman Cave, Wheeler Peak and the Jailhouse Grill.
T&D’s is convenience store and restaurant located in the beautiful and quaint town of Baker. Terry and Dave, owners of T&D’s offered to procure hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings for a BBQ. They generously allowed the association to use their super-sized grill and patio for lunch. Sarah Clasby coordinated this event with Terry and Dave and arrived in Baker well in advance of the group. Although nervous about grilling for everyone, she got the burgers and dogs going and then happily relinquished the spatula to Dan Poulson and Ric Mortensen. The environment was awesome and the setting perfect for this event. It felt much like a family reunion and the food was tasty. Thanks to DATS Trucking and Lunkwitz Trucking for sponsoring meals for this trip.
Justin Brande and Warner Truck Center arranged for each participant to tour Lehman Cave. This took some creativity because cave tours are only offered for groups of twenty. Justin put his organization skills to work and came up with a plan where about half of the group rode to the cave and participated in a tour while the other half ascended to the top of Wheeler Peak. Following the first groups tour, they then rode to the top of Wheeler and the second group went on the cave tour. Thanks to Justin for his time dedicated to organizing these events and to Warner Truck Center for sponsoring the cave tours.
Following the cave tours and rides to the peak, everyone reconvened at T&D’s and then finished the day’s journey into Ely, Nevada. Kelsey Halls made previous arrangements for blocks of rooms at the Ely La Quinta and Ramada Inn hotels. Thanks to Kelsey for getting these set up. Sarah arranged for a large buffet dinner at the Jail House Grill. Mark conducted the dinner and raffle activities and once again thanked all the sponsors including Brumback Trucking, DATS Trucking, Double D Distribution, KB Oil, Lunkwitz Transportation, Parke Cox Trucking, Quality Tire Company Stokes Trucking, Warner Truck Center, Executech, beehive Insurance and WCF Insurance.
This was a terrific event and more encouraged to participate next year. The weather was perfect, the food was great and the company was awesome.
